A weak Euro really has affected economies the world over, sparing virtually none. Taiwan is no exception, as some major exporters in Asia including Sony Corp and Asustek Computer Inc recounted similar tales of the weak euro, which threatens to hurt PC sales in the technology sector’s second-half scale. It doesn’t help either that China has put a stop on an expanding economy that grew at the rate of 11.9 % in the first quarter.
The weak Euro crisis hasn’t directly hit the technology sector yet, but any further credit tightening will surely have adverse effects on demand. China would block loans to part makers, hitting hard China-based factories owned by Taiwanese companies.
Yuanta Securities analyst Vincent Chen said, “That could be a double blow. There should be a lot of design-ins at the show but we are not sure if there will be a lot of orders for them.” Taiwan has a benchmark in the PC industry. Its companies work for top PC brands like Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Apple. Most of the laptops in the world are manufactured in Taiwan.
But that is the sad news. The good news, though, is that the world’s second largest tech show was a success. This year’s Computex fair in Taiwan runs from June 1 to 5, and it has already hit a successful note. Apple’s newly launched iPad sprung up in the tech show. Acer Inc, Micro-Star International Co (MSI), Asustek Computer and China’s Hanwang Technology Co showcased their own tablet PCs and e-books.
MSI Chairman Joseph Hsu, whose company produces PCs and motherboards said, “There are some noises about Europe but we still expect to see a good third quarter after we launch new products”. By the third quarter demand is expected to pick up. New processors will be promoted to power laptops and other gadgets.
